Managing and preserving email in government has been a herculean task that 50 states, 6 territories, and the District of Columbia have been dealing with for decades. Questions about proper use of email, separation of personal and public information, handling of protected and sensitive information, and access methodologies continue to challenge government records managers and archivists. PREPARE sought to address these issues of technology and governance with a three-phase project: assessing needs, testing tools, and providing direct assistance in the form of mentoring and best practices related to email preservation and management throughout the enterprise of government.
